Kenai Peninsula Alaska Chapter #8150

Motorcycle Safety Tips for the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel

I used to work in underground mines, so riding in a tunnel feels familiar to me. I think being familiar with the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier and knowing what to expect will help you ride through safely and confidently. Otherwise, it’s easy to start thinking about the rock over you and the train rails under you instead of staying focused on your riding. If you haven’t rolled through the tunnel before, or even if you have, I suggest you check out the DOT website that has lots of interesting information about the 2.5 mile tunnel and a “virtual drive” with pictures and descriptions of each section. The motorcycle safety information below is from their website at: www.dot.state.ak.us/creg/whittiertunnel/index.shtml. Still not sure? Do a tunnel practice drill. Set up a long path with water bottles or other items on both sides and practice riding a straight line between them. Keep your head in the game.

  • Helmets are required for rider and passenger.
  • Motorcycles will be released after all other traffic.
  • Wait for the traffic control light in your lane to turn green before proceeding.
  • Cross the rail at an angle, ride only between the rails, and avoid any contact with the rails.
  • Maintain 25 MPH throughout the tunnel.
  • Ride in single file.
  • Maintain 100 feet between motorcycles.
  • Minimize weaving, stay away from the rails.
  • Be wary of target fixation that can occur when you focus at the end of the tunnel. Keep your eyes moving.
  • The concrete road surface is often wet, avoid quick movements.
  • You may encounter wind turbulence from the jet fans located 1600 feet from each end of the tunnel.
